In recent years, a variety of efforts have been made in political science to enable, encourage, or require scholars to be more open and explicit about the bases of their empirical claims and, in turn, make those claims more readily evaluable by others. While qualitative scholars have long taken an interest in making their research open, reflexive, and systematic, the recent push for overarching transparency norms and requirements has provoked serious concern within qualitative research communities and raised fundamental questions about the meaning, value, costs, and intellectual relevance of transparency for qualitative inquiry. In this Perspectives Reflection, we crystallize the central findings of a three-year deliberative process—the Qualitative Transparency Deliberations (QTD)—involving hundreds of political scientists in a broad discussion of these issues. Following an overview of the process and the key insights that emerged, we present summaries of the QTD Working Groups’ final reports. Drawing on a series of public, online conversations that unfolded at www.qualtd.net, the reports unpack transparency’s promise, practicalities, risks, and limitations in relation to different qualitative methodologies, forms of evidence, and research contexts. Taken as a whole, these reports—the full versions of which can be found in the Supplementary Materials—offer practical guidance to scholars designing and implementing qualitative research, and to editors, reviewers, and funders seeking to develop criteria of evaluation that are appropriate—as understood by relevant research communities—to the forms of inquiry being assessed. We dedicate this Reflection to the memory of our coauthor and QTD working group leader Kendra Koivu.1

Objectives: This study assesses whether pegylated interferon and ribavirin is cost-effective compared with no antiviral treatment provided in routine clinical practice, for different patient subgroups.
Methods: The cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) uses a Markov decision model to estimate the lifetime cost per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) of antiviral treatment compared with no treatment. The model is populated with data on sustained virological responses, costs, and transition probabilities all taken from a large representative sample of UK cases and centers (Trent HCV database).
Results: The CEA found that pegylated interferon and ribavirin was cost-effective for most patient subgroups. The CEA found that for patients with genotype non-1, the intervention led to cost reductions and gains of at least 0.5 QALYs. For genotype 1 cases with mild or moderate disease, and younger cirrhotic patients (aged 40 or less), costs per QALY remained below £20,000 ($40,000 or €29,000). For genotype 1 cases with cirrhosis aged 50, the mean cost per QALY rose to over £60,000 ($120,000 or €87,000).
Conclusions: The study concludes that, based on cost and effectiveness data collected from routine clinical practice, treatment with pegylated interferon and ribavirin is generally cost-effective. The study shows that there are variations according to patient subgroup and for older (aged 50 or over) genotype 1 patients with cirrhosis, antiviral treatment appears less cost-effective.

A comparative dynamic x-ray diffraction (DXRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) study was performed in the investigation of mullite and spinel formation from slowly hydrolyzed single phase gels with Al/Si ratios ranging from 1/1 to 14/1. Both metastable tetragonal mullite and spinel were observed to form at temperatures <1000 °C in the gels with Al/Si ratios <8/1 and mullite transformed to the orthorhombic structure at ∼1250 °C. However, at higher Al/Si ratios, spinel was the only crystalline phase detected at <1000 °C and orthorhombic mullite formed directly at temperatures >1250 °C. As the Al/Si ratio increases, both the tetragonal mullite and spinel formation temperatures decrease while the orthorhombic mullite formation temperature increases. Based on the Al/Si composition where the formation extents of tetragonal mullite and spinel were maximum, their compositions are estimated to be 2Al2O3 · SiO2 and 6A12O3 · SiO2, respectively.

The effect of steam on the reaction kinetics of both mullite and metastable spinel formation from sol-gel precursors, having an Al/Si atomic ratio of 3/1, was studied using dynamic x-ray diffraction (DXRD) coupled with differential thermal analysis (DTA). Steam was observed to accelerate the nucleation of tetragonal mullite in single phase gels at ~980 °C. When single phase gels are formed with a faster hydrolysis step, the presence of steam also increases the nucleation of metastable spinel at this temperature, possibly due to the in situ formation of boehmite in locally enriched alumina regions at <300 °C. In addition, steam also enhances the decomposition of metastable spinel in single phase gels and transient alumina in the diphasic gel at ~1200 °C, probably as a result of surface interactions of water with spinel or transient alumina grains. There was no observable effect of steam on second stage mullite formation (~1250 °C) in either the single or diphasic gels. This is attributed to the hypothesis that the rate-limiting step at this stage might be the dissolution of alumina into the silica-rich amorphous matrix, a step that is unaffected by the presence of steam.

The mullite formation process in both single phase and diphasic sol-gel precursors to mullite was studied using dynamic x-ray diffraction (DXRD). A metastable, tetragonal-like mullite phase was observed in all the single gels at temperatures from 980 °C to 1200 °C, but not in any of the other precursors. The tetragonal to orthorhombic mullite transformation was very slow as the lattice parameters, a and b, split and moved gradually away from each other as a result of a gradual decrease of alumina content in the mullite solid solution with increasing temperature from 1100 °C to 1200 °C. The formation of tetragonal mullite coincides with that of the Al–Si spinel. The occurrence of tetragonal mullite or the spinel (or both) is determined mainly by the processing conditions of the sol-gel precursors.

The reaction kinetics for the formation of mullite (3Al2O3 · 2SiO2) from sol-gel derived precursors were studied using dynamic x-ray diffraction (DXRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The reaction kinetics of diphasic and single phase gels are compared and different reaction mechanisms are found for each gel. Mullite formation in the diphasic gel exhibits an Avrami type, diffusion-controlled growth mechanism with initial mullite formation temperatures of about 1250 °C and an activation energy on the order 103 kJ/mole. On the other hand, mullite formation from the single phase gel is a nucleation-controlled process with an initial formation temperature of 940 °C and a much lower activation energy of about 300 kJ/mole.

My attention was first drawn to the change of volume which takes place when a salt is dissolved in different quantities of water, by an experiment shown by Sir William Thomson in his class at the Glasgow University. He took a wide glass tube, about 3 feet long, sealed at one end, and having a narrow tube attached to the other end. The lower half of this tube he filled with a saturated solution of common salt, and on the top of that he placed a layer of water, which just reached a mark about the middle of the small tube. He then corked the open end, and mixed up the water and brine by inverting the tube two or three times, when it was seen that the solution had contracted.

In the course of a series of experiments upon fusion point, as determined by the mercurial thermometer, I had occasion to investigate several of the properties of that instrument. In the hope that the results of that investigation may economise the labour of other experimenters, and aid in its accuracy, I have ventured to submit them to the consideration of the Society.
